THE REAL YELLOWSTONE™

A RETURN TO THE CAMPFIRE
Inspired by Yellowstone’s evening campfire tradition.
THE REAL YELLOWSTONE unfolds through intimate gatherings where firsthand voices, photographs, and short documentary film are experienced together in a shared setting.Inspired by Yellowstone’s evening campfire programs and amphitheater talks, each evening brings people back into the atmosphere where stories were once passed person to person.Across the nights, Yellowstone’s hidden human ecosystems emerge — revealing the people, culture, traditions, and lived experiences that shaped the park from the inside.
THE NIGHT
Each evening focuses on a specific theme, with a small number of people sharing firsthand stories supported by archival images and short documentary film. There is no script. The stories come through memory, conversation, humor, reflection, and lived experience. Some are light. Some are more serious.Together, they show what the work was actually like and how people came to understand the park through experience, responsibility, and the people around them.
CARRYING IT FORWARD
Each gathering contributes to a growing body of work — preserving firsthand stories, lived experience, and the culture that shaped Yellowstone from the inside. These evenings are filmed and recorded, helping carry forward voices, knowledge, and lived experience that were often never formally recorded.Over time, THE REAL YELLOWSTONE becomes a living archive of stories, traditions, perspectives, and ways of knowing Yellowstone that were once passed person to person. It is not simply about looking backward. It is about making sure this world — and the people who shaped it — are not lost with time.
WHERE THIS TAKE PLACE
Many people still remember Yellowstone’s ranger and naturalist talks held in the park’s amphitheaters — places like Madison, Fishing Bridge, and Bridge Bay.The image at the top of this page is the Madison amphitheater, when it was still actively used for evening programs beneath the Yellowstone night sky.I remember the sound of campfires crackling, the evening air turning cold, and voices sharing stories about the wildlife, landscapes, history, and people of Yellowstone. It was an experience that brought people closer to the park — and to each other. In that spirit, THE REAL YELLOWSTONE carries forward the tradition of the Yellowstone campfire talk through intimate gatherings built around firsthand storytelling and film. While the gatherings are not held inside the park itself, they take place in the surrounding gateway communities connected to Yellowstone and its people. These communities remain deeply woven into Yellowstone’s continuing story.
